Which cards can lead a Commander deck?
Understand solo commanders, explicit commander permission, legal pairs, color identity and unreleased cards in Esper Forge.
The normal command zone
A traditional Commander deck is led by a legendary creature. Some legendary Vehicles can also lead when the applicable rules and card type permit it, and certain cards carry explicit Oracle text stating that they can be your commander. The printed frame, artwork or casual reputation of a card is not enough; its current Oracle identity is the reliable source.
A card that is legal in the ninety-nine is not automatically legal in the command zone. Conversely, a card with explicit commander permission may be valid even when it does not look like the normal legendary-creature template. Esper Forge resolves the canonical card and checks the command-zone rule before starting a build.
Two commanders need a real pairing rule
You cannot place two unrelated legendary creatures in the command zone merely because their colors or themes match. Legal pairs are created by supported rules such as Partner, Partner with, Friends forever, Choose a Background or Doctor's companion. Each rule has its own conditions, and named partners must point to the correct counterpart.
Both cards contribute to the deck's color identity. They also occupy two of the 100 cards, leaving 98 main-deck slots. A companion outside the command zone is a different concept and should not be treated as a second commander.
Color identity controls the deck
Color identity includes colored mana symbols in the mana cost and rules text, plus characteristic information that the rules treat as part of identity. Reminder text does not expand it. Every card in the deck must fit inside the combined identity of the command zone, while colorless cards can be used across identities when no other rule excludes them.
Double-faced cards need all relevant faces considered for identity, even though only the front face decides whether a modal card counts as a land in Esper Forge's structural analysis. This distinction matters: legality and mana-base accounting answer different questions.
Bans, future releases and local agreements
A banned card remains unavailable even if it otherwise matches the command-zone template. Esper Forge also allows eligible, known upcoming commanders from its Scryfall bulk data before their release date, provided they are not banned and their Oracle information is complete enough to validate. Their color identity already determines the proposed deck.
Preview information can change before release, and a playgroup may apply house rules that the public deck validator does not. Recheck a future card after its official release and discuss exceptional commanders with the table. The saved legality marker is evidence from the current data snapshot, not a substitute for a tournament judge or local agreement.
